Born in 1933, in Kanakapura, Bangalore, Dr. T.V. Venkatachala Sastry, completed his M.A. in Kannada at University of Mysore, and obtained a Ph.D. in "A Comparative Study of Neminatha Puranas in Kannada" from University of Mysore in the year 1972.

He is a specialized teacher in the field of Kannada Language and Grammar, Prosody, Textual Criticism, Poetics, Lexicography, History of Literature, Classical Literature & Epigraphy.

During his profession as a Teacher, he has served prestigious institutions like St. Joseph's College, Bangalore, Osmania University, Hyderabad, Institute of Kannada Studies, University of Mysore. He rose to the position of Professor here in 1984 & retired as the Director of Institute of Kannada Studies, University of Mysore in the year 1993.

He has also edited a numerous well-known literary works such as Prabhuddha Karnataka, published by University of Mysore, Kannada Vishaya Visvakosha, Epigraphia Carnatica Volumes, Karnataka Lochana of B.M. Sri Memorial Trust.

He has been associated with many institutions like Multi-Lingual Dictionary Project, Institute of Asian Studies, Madras, Publication of Ancient Kannada Works, Department of Kannada & Culture, Govt. of Karnataka, National Institute of Prakrit Studies and Research, Shravanabelagola, National Encyclopedia Centre, Bhuvaneshwar, Ancient Indian Literature Project, Sahitya Academy, Delhi and so on.

Some of the important among the several honours, awards conferred on the author are : Kannada Rajyotsava Award by Govt. of Karnataka in 1988, Honour given by Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore in the Diamond Jubilee Celebration, Mysore University Non-teaching Employees Association, BEML Kannada Association, Mysore etc.

He has penned about 55 books & about 400 papers including articles published in Central Sahitya Academy's Encyclopedia of Indian Literature, Critical Inventory of Ramayana Studies in the World - Volume I and Encyclopedia of Karnataka Folklore, Volume I of Institute of Asian Studies, Madras. Some of his works which have received awards are :

* Kannada Chandah Swaroopa - University of Mysore Golden Jubilee Award
* S.G. Narasimhacharyara Kavitegalu - T.N. Srikantaiah Memorial Cash Award
* Kannada Chitra Kavya - Sahitya Academy Award
* Sediyapu Krishnabhatta Award, Udupi.
* He has been felicitated on his 60th Birthday with a Felicitation Volume "Srimukha".

Dr. Venkatachala Sastry also participated, presided & presented in several National and State Level Literary Seminars and symposia held in Mysore, Bangalore, Udupi, Dharmasthala, Mudubidre, Dharwar, Delhi, Bijapur, Mangalore etc.
