Dr. H.S. Gopal Rao



A well known authority on Karnataka's History with a specialisation in Epigraphy, Dr. H.S.Gopal Rao continues to contribute to the epigraphical studies of the state through his acclaimed books and in the capacity of General Secretary, Karnataka Ithihasa Academy. Born in 1946, he did his Diploma in Electrical Engineering and is serving as Asst. Engineer in the State Electricity Board in Bangalore.

Having done the Epigraphy (Senior) course in Kannada Sahitya Parishat, he bagged two Gold Medals in 1984 for his Masters Degree in Kannada and again won a Gold Medal for his Ph.D. from Mysore University (1991).

Apart from editing various publications he has penned about 150 Kannnada and 50 English articles. His drama "Gullputti - Munputti" won the state award in 1977. Some of his acclaimed books are -

* Shasanagala Hinneleyalli Kalayana Chalukya Devalayagalu -
   Ondu Samskrutika Adhyayana (Ph.D. Thesis)
* Itihasada Adhyayana - Andu Indu
* His work Karanataka Ekikarana Itihasa, considered to be one of the best that has dealt with the    painful but brave struggle of people of Karnataka for the formation of thier own state has    recently won the Karnataka Sahitya academy's award.
* He has also written four Novels in Kannada viz., Jenu Nanju, Gati, Bhinna and Parigrahana.

* Nagabhinandana,
* Neladasiri ( Souvenir - giving the historical importance of his home town Nelamangala)
